Asmita has over 25 years of experience in international development. She became a consultant in 2002 carrying out assignments across the globe on a wide range of issues related to human rights, protection, aid policy and management. Prior to becoming a consultant, she worked for UN agencies in Geneva in the 1990s. Asmita is also a part-time adjudicator on various regulatory and investigatory bodies including the Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO); various health profession regulators and as a Magistrate in the Criminal Courts. She has a background education in law and public policy.
Asmita has longstanding experience of safeguarding having co-authored a report for UNHCR/SC-UK on the sexual exploitation of refugee children by aid workers and peacekeepers in West Africa which led to global policy on sexual exploitation and abuse (SEA) for the first time, including the 2003 UN Secretary-General Bulletin. She has been engaged with this issue ever since, through independent research and advocacy as well by providing technical services (e.g. evaluations, risk assessments, investigations etc.) to multilateral organisations, donor governments and NGOs. Asmita is a recognised expert in the field and has been asked to speak at global events, to provide commentary to the media and to participate in high-level fora as an independent voice
