The lengthy article is built along an investigation of the extend and devastating consequences of sexual abuse by aid workers in the Butembo region in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. 

The New Humanitarian and the Thomson Reuters Foundation spoke to 22 women in Butembo who said male aid workers responding to an Ebola crisis offered them jobs in exchange for sex. Further claims were done by a larger group of 50 women from the city of Beni. They made similar allegations, against men, aid workers from at least seven large organizations, both UN bodies and INGOs.

The consequences on women are unintended pregnancies and risky abortions, live threatening traumatic experiences, marginalization and isolation and insufficient access to restoring victims’ support. Also, cases of deathcare been reported.

Many cases are still under investigations. The involved organizations have declared commitment to run their own investigations and support independent investigations as well.
